What to Expect During Your Session
Your family’s session should feel relaxed, easy, and—most of all—fun. Here’s how we’ll make sure it’s an experience you’ll all enjoy.
Welcome! If you're here, you're probably curious about what a family documentary photography session is like. I’m so glad you’re considering this unique way to capture your family’s story. Here’s a quick look at what documentary photography is and what you can expect when you book a session with me.
What is Documentary Family Photography?
Capturing Real Life
Documentary family photography is all about capturing your real, everyday life—no posing, no staging, and no perfectly curated moments. It's the magic of your family as it is right now, in your own space, doing what you naturally do. Whether it’s making breakfast on a lazy Saturday morning, building pillow forts with the kids, or snuggling up for bedtime stories, my goal is to preserve these honest, beautiful moments that tell your unique story. Life’s little details, as they happen, are what make your family's story truly special.
Before Your Session:
Getting to Know You
Before your session, I’ll send you a quick questionnaire to get to know your family better—your favorite activities, what a typical day looks like, and any special moments you'd love to capture. We’ll schedule a call about a week or so before your session to chat about what’s most important to you and discuss any questions you may have. It’s a super casual conversation—no stress! This is all about making sure the session reflects your family’s authentic dynamic.
During Your Session:
Relax and Enjoy the Moment
On the day of your session, you just go about your day as you normally would—I’ll be there to capture it all, from the little details to the big moments. There’s no need to dress up or clean the house (really!). I’m there to document life as it truly is so you can relax, have fun, and forget the camera is even there.
After Your Session:
Reliving the Memories
After your session, I’ll carefully select and edit your images, turning them into a collection of memories you’ll cherish forever. You’ll receive a link to a private online gallery where you can download your images, share them with family and friends, and order prints or albums if you’d like.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What should we wear?
A: Anything that feels comfortable! Since this is all about documenting your real life, there’s no need to dress up. Wear what you’d normally wear on a weekend with the kids.
Q: My house is a mess—is that okay?
A: Absolutely! Life is messy, and that’s part of its beauty. I’m there to capture your family as you are, not a magazine-ready version of your home. Don’t worry about cleaning up for me!
Q: Can we include pets?
A: Yes, please! Pets are part of the family too, and I love capturing the joy and chaos they bring into your everyday moments.
Q: What if my kids don’t cooperate?
A: That’s totally okay! This isn’t a traditional photoshoot, so there’s no pressure for anyone to pose or behave perfectly. I’m there to capture the authentic moments, and that includes meltdowns and all!
